“I didn’t know where to go. Many places said they couldn’t help me. But STN took my case seriously. They gave me support, helped me feel safe, and made me feel that I wasn’t alone. Thank you for standing by me.”
IS, a 58-year-old Ukrainian woman living in North London, came to us in distress. She was experiencing emotional and financial abuse from her partner—unable to access her own benefit payments and unaware that what she was going through was a form of domestic abuse.
During our first meeting, we gently explained that she had the right to safety, independence, and financial control. With our support, IS opened her own bank account with Monzo and we helped transfer her Universal Credit and disability benefits into her name. This was a critical step in restoring her financial independence.

IS is now in safe housing, free from her abuser, and continuing to rebuild her life. However, her journey hasn’t been easy. She is currently fighting a legal property dispute. Due to her mental health challenges, many legal services had turned her away. But we didn’t give up.
Recognising her vulnerabilities, we supported IS to apply for a court-appointed solicitor through special legal provisions designed to protect individuals unable to represent themselves. She now has legal representation and is receiving the support she needs to face the legal process.
