Supporting D.G. through Career Transition and Skill Development

Client Profile

  • Name: D.G.
  • Age: 45
  • Referral: Enfield Mental Health Department
  • Background: Long-term unemployed, former caregiver for terminally ill mother, suffering from depression

Background

D.G., a 45-year-old woman, was referred to us by the Enfield Mental Health Department due to her struggle with depression following the death of her terminally ill mother, whom she had cared for over 12 years. After her mother’s passing, D.G. was moved from Employment Support Allowance (ESA) to Universal Credit (UC), which required her to actively seek employment. The UC demands included looking for work daily, applying for at least five jobs per week, and providing evidence of these efforts, under threat of losing her benefits.

Initial Assessment

Understanding D.G.’s situation, we provided her with a one-on-one consultation with our career advisor. A comprehensive ‘skills health check’ was conducted to identify her strengths and areas for improvement. The assessment revealed D.G.’s strong skills in caring, cooking, and her previous experience in cleaning jobs. She expressed interest in pursuing a career in care and catering.

To help D.G. transition into her desired career, we offered a structured support plan:

1. Career Guidance:

  • Provided personalized career advice based on her skills assessment.
  • Explored potential career paths in care and catering.

2. Skill Development:

  • Enrolled D.G. in basic computer and employability skills training.
  • Assisted her in creating a professional CV and setting up an email address.
  • Taught her how to use a PC for learning, research, and job hunting.

3. Professional Certification:

  • Guided D.G. to complete a Care Certificate.
  • Assisted her in enrolling in courses for Food Hygiene and Health & Safety, which were found through Reed Courses with the help of another charity.

4. Job Application Support:

  • Helped D.G. apply for jobs in her areas of interest.
  • Provided ongoing support and encouragement throughout the job search process.
