What Is LGBT+ Abuse?\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

LGBT+ abuse refers to <\/span>any form of domestic or intimate partner abuse<\/b> experienced by someone who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or otherwise outside of the heterosexual\/cisgender norm.<\/span><\/p>

Abuse can include:<\/span><\/p>

  • Physical violence<\/b> or threats<\/span><\/li>
  • Emotional manipulation<\/b> or gaslighting<\/span><\/li>
  • Controlling behaviour<\/b>\u2014who you see, where you go, how you present yourself<\/span><\/li>
  • Sexual coercion<\/b> or unwanted contact<\/span><\/li>
  • Outing you<\/b> without your consent (to family, employers, or online)<\/span><\/li>
  • Using your identity against you<\/b> (e.g. \u201cNo one will believe you because you\u2019re trans\u201d)<\/span><\/li>
  • Blocking access to gender-affirming care, medication, or services<\/b><\/li>
  • Homophobic, transphobic, or biphobic insults<\/b>\u2014even within the relationship<\/span><\/li>
  • Isolating you from LGBT+ community spaces or support networks<\/b><\/li><\/ul>

    Abuse is about <\/span>power and control<\/b>. No matter what your identity is, no one has the right to control, belittle, or harm you.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

    Many LGBT+ survivors don\u2019t seek help for fear they won\u2019t be believed or supported. You might worry that:<\/span><\/p>

    • Services won\u2019t understand your identity<\/span><\/li>
    • The abuse \u201cisn\u2019t serious enough\u201d<\/span><\/li>
    • You\u2019ll face <\/span>homophobia, transphobia, or biphobia<\/b> when you reach out<\/span><\/li>
    • Your community will reject you for \u201cspeaking out\u201d<\/span><\/li>
    • You\u2019ll be outed if you seek help<\/span><\/li><\/ul>

      LGBT+ survivors may face additional or unique forms of abuse, including:<\/span><\/p>

      • Misgendering or deadnaming<\/b> (using your former name or incorrect pronouns)<\/span><\/li>
      • Threats to report you to immigration or child services<\/b><\/li>
      • Undermining your identity<\/b> (“You\u2019re not really bisexual\u201d or \u201cYou\u2019re just confused\u201d)<\/span><\/li>
      • Forcing you to hide your identity<\/b> in public or with family<\/span><\/li>
      • Using transition status or sexuality to control or blackmail you<\/b><\/li><\/ul>
