Polygamy refers to being married to more than one person at the same time. In some cultures or religions, polygamy is practised with mutual consent and respect. However, <\/span>polygamy becomes abusive<\/b> when it is imposed, forced, or used to control, isolate, or harm someone\u2014most often women.<\/span><\/p>

In the UK, <\/span>polygamous marriage is illegal<\/b> if contracted while living in the UK, and being forced into or manipulated into such relationships may be a form of <\/span>coercive control<\/b>, <\/span>psychological abuse<\/b>, or even <\/span>forced marriage<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>

When Polygamy Becomes Abuse<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Polygamy is abusive when:<\/span><\/p>

  • You are pressured, coerced, or forced to accept your partner marrying another person<\/span><\/li>
  • You are not allowed to object, speak out, or leave the relationship<\/span><\/li>
  • You are blamed, shamed, or silenced for expressing pain, discomfort, or distress<\/span><\/li>
  • You experience emotional or financial neglect once a new wife or partner is introduced<\/span><\/li>
  • You are made to feel worthless, less than, or \u201creplaceable\u201d<\/span><\/li>
  • Your mental or physical health suffers as a result of isolation, neglect, or comparison<\/span><\/li><\/ul>

    Abuse Linked to Coerced Polygamy<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    In relationships where polygamy is used abusively, survivors may experience:<\/span><\/p>

    • Emotional abuse<\/b> \u2013 being manipulated, gaslit, shamed, or blamed<\/span><\/li>
    • Psychological abuse<\/b> \u2013 threats, intimidation, or being told you\u2019ll be rejected by family or community if you object<\/span><\/li>
    • Financial abuse<\/b> \u2013 resources being split unfairly, leaving the first wife or children in poverty<\/span><\/li>
    • Sexual abuse<\/b> \u2013 feeling forced to be intimate out of fear that your partner will \u201creplace\u201d or punish you<\/span><\/li>
    • Spiritual abuse<\/b> \u2013 having religious teachings twisted to justify control or silence dissent<\/span><\/li>
    • Isolation<\/b> \u2013 being removed from support networks or not allowed to speak openly about your feelings<\/span><\/li>
    • Forced marriage<\/b> \u2013 in some cases, a woman may be married into a polygamous household without full knowledge or consent<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

      What the Law Says (UK)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

      • Polygamous marriages<\/b> are not legally recognised in the UK if contracted here.<\/span><\/li>
      • It is a criminal offence<\/b> to knowingly enter into a second marriage while still married under UK law.<\/span><\/li>
      • Coercive control<\/b> (a criminal offence under the Domestic Abuse Act 2021) includes forcing or manipulating someone into accepting a polygamous relationship.<\/span><\/li>
