Spiritual or religious abuse occurs when someone uses faith, scripture, spiritual authority, or religious practice to dominate, manipulate, shame, or exploit another person. This form of abuse can happen in personal relationships, religious communities, schools, or places of worship.<\/span><\/p>

What Is Spiritual or Religious Abuse?\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Spiritual or religious abuse is when an individual:<\/span><\/p>

  • Uses religious texts or beliefs to control your decisions or behaviour<\/span><\/li>
  • Shames you into obedience by telling you God\/faith\/spiritual leaders will punish you<\/span><\/li>
  • Forces you to take part in rituals or religious practices against your will<\/span><\/li>
  • Prevents you from practising your faith freely\u2014or punishes you for not doing so<\/span><\/li>
  • Uses religious \u201crules\u201d to justify physical, emotional, or sexual abuse<\/span><\/li>
  • Exploits their spiritual position (e.g. clergy, religious leader) to harm or silence you<\/span><\/li>
  • Threatens spiritual consequences (e.g. hell, curses, excommunication) to instil fear<\/span><\/li>
  • Isolates you from friends, family, or wider society under the guise of \u201creligious purity\u201d<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    • Telling a woman that she must \u201csubmit\u201d to her husband even if he\u2019s abusive<\/span><\/li>
    • Using religious texts to shame or punish LGBTQIA+ individuals<\/span><\/li>
    • Forcing children or adults into exorcisms or \u201cconversion therapy\u201d<\/span><\/li>
    • Using spirituality to justify financial exploitation (\u201cdonate or face divine punishment\u201d)<\/span><\/li>
    • Denying someone access to medical care in favour of prayer or fasting<\/span><\/li>
    • Accusing someone of being “possessed” to isolate, control, or harm them<\/span><\/li>
    • Using religion to justify female genital mutilation, forced marriage, or child marriage<\/span><\/li>
    • Threatening divine punishment if someone leaves an abusive relationship or community<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
