Safe Internet Browsing for Survivors of Domestic Violence

Your safety is the most important thing. If you are worried that someone may be monitoring your online activity, here are some steps you can take to browse more safely.

Quick Safety Exit

If you are in danger and need to leave this page quickly, close the browser window immediately or press Alt + F4 (Windows) or Command + W (Mac). On a phone, switch to another app or close the browser.

Browsing in Safer Ways

  • Use a private or incognito window. This helps prevent your history from being saved, but it does not make you completely invisible.
  • Clear your browsing history and cache after visiting sensitive sites. Look for “History” or “Privacy” settings in your browser.
  • Use a different device if possible. A trusted friend’s phone, a library computer, or a work device may be safer than a shared home computer.
  • Consider a VPN or secure browser (like Tor) to hide your activity, but only if you’re confident the person monitoring you won’t notice changes in your internet use.

Be Cautious with Accounts and Devices

  • Avoid saving passwords on shared devices.
  • Log out of accounts after use, especially email and social media.
  • Check for spyware or monitoring apps if you suspect your phone or computer is being tracked. A tech safety advocate may be able to help.
  • Turn off location services on your phone and apps when not needed.

Use Safer Communication Options

  • Create a new email account that only you know about, using a strong password.
  • Use messaging apps with end-to-end encryption (like Signal or WhatsApp).
  • Be careful with social media. Adjust privacy settings, and avoid posting your location.

Remember

No online safety step is 100% foolproof. If you think someone is monitoring your internet use, consider reaching out for support from a domestic violence hotline or advocate. They can help you plan the safest way to use technology.

24/7 Support in the UK:

  • National Domestic Violence Hotline: 0808 2000 247
  • If you are outside the UK, search for a local hotline or support service in your country.

You are not alone.
