DBS Services is a Registered Body with the Disclosure and Barring Service (previously called the Criminal Records Bureau – CRB), and we are approved by the Disclosure and Barring Service (CRB) to process DBS Checks for eligible applicants, small or large Organisations. We provide a professional, personal, and efficient checking service.

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) helps employers make safer recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups, including children.

STN has access to the DBS system and individuals can come into our centre and complete the forms with us to make their application.

What are DBS Checks?

The DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) was formed after the merge of the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) and ISA (Independent Safeguarding Authority) as a means for employers to make informed and safe recruitment decisions. Carrying out DBS checks online allows businesses to safeguard their organisation by preventing unsuitable candidates from working with vulnerable people.

How many types of DBS checks are there?

There are 3 different types of DBS checks – Basic, Standard and Enhanced. Basic disclosures can be applied for by an individual, whilst Standard and Enhanced DBS checks are carried out by employers on their employees and, in some cases, volunteers.

Basic Disclosure

A Basic DBS Check (or Disclosure check) is available to anyone living in England and/or Wales and is a search carried out by the Disclosure & Barring Service. It is a search to check for any unspent convictions or conditional cautions on an applicant’s criminal history, allowing them to present to an employer in order to make an informed hire. If you live and/or work in Scotland, please call us to apply for a search through Disclosure Scotland.

Standard DBS Check

A Standard check is processed by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). It searches an applicant’s criminal history to identify any convictions, both spent and unspent, cautions, warnings and reprimands. This level of check is only available for employers to obtain on behalf of their employees.

Enhanced DBS Check

This level of check is also processed by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and this too searches the applicants’ criminal history for any cautions, warnings, reprimands or convictions (both spent and unspent).

Moreover, the Enhanced Check also searches the children and vulnerable adults ‘barred lists’ to see if the applicant is barred from working with those groups. There is also an area within the Enhanced Check process where local police can add any relevant information they may hold about the applicant.

This level of check is only available for employers to obtain on behalf of their employees.

Do volunteers need DBS checks?

By law there is no requirement for volunteers to have a DBS check, this is determined by the organisation where the volunteer is working. Standard and Enhanced checks are available at a reduced rate for volunteers, provided the applicant meets the volunteer criteria specified by the DBS.

How often do DBS checks need to be done?

There is no official expiry date on a DBS check as any information included is accurate at the time the check was completed. The frequency of renewals is determined by the organisation or governing body in question, with time scales varying from every six months to every three years.
